This gives us the chance to meet face-to-face, take a detailed case history and discuss your problems, desired outcomes and the treatment process, in much more detail. Giving you the opportunity to ask any questions, before making up your mind about continuing with the treatment. You will get honest answers to any questions you might have and an estimate of the number of sessions you may require. Also this initial session gives me the chance to determine if I can help you. If I don't believe that I can help, I will not waste your time or money, and may refer you on to someone with more relevant experience. |
![]() |
How many sessions might I need?
A very difficult question to answer as everyone is different. For short term therapy dealing with a specific issue, you will usually need to budget for around 6 to 8 sessions. For more deep rooted, chronic or complex issues requiring long term therapy, more sessions over a longer period of time will obviously be required. Sessions usually take place weekly, but this can sometimes be negotiated to suit your circumstances. After our initial consultation I will have a better sense of both you and your problem, and will be able to give you a more accurate estimate.
Location:
I practice from a consulting room in my home in Chorlton in South Manchester, close to junction 7 & 8 of the M60 and the end of the M56. Within very easy travelling distance of Didsbury, Withington, Sale, Streford, Old Trafford, Urmston, Fallowfield, Stockport and Altrincham.
I am also a consultant at the On Harley Street clinic, at 1 Harley Street, London.

Some
questions you might have asked
yourself about hypnotherapy:
What is hypnosis?
A natural state of absorbed focused concentration combined with heightened awareness. People experience this state naturally throughout each and every day. Common examples might include, day dreaming, when you are totally immersed in a good book, movie or TV show, engrossed in a favourite hobby, lost in thought, or even when driving. There is no one particular hypnotic feeling as such and everyone experiences it in a slightly different way, so most people don't normally realise when they have entered the state. They usually just feel very pleasantly comfortable and a little zoned out. Hypnosis is simply a state of mind, in much the same way that happiness is a state of mind.
All hypnosis is really self hypnosis, which means that the hypnotist is guiding you into hypnosis, rather than doing hypnosis to you, therefore you always have control and a choice over what happens.
One common misconception is that hypnosis requires some form of special power, this is simply not true. Hypnosis is a perfectly normal and natural state of mind that we experience frequently in our day to day life and which almost anyone can enter at will. Guiding someone into hypnosis is a skill which anyone can learn to do. However, as with any other skill, some people have personality traits that make them naturally better at it than others.
What is hypnotherapy?
In hypnotherapy you are guided into the state of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. It is literally therapy done while in the state of hypnosis and can be thought of as an effective and speedy form of psychotherapy. Hypnotherapy can help change your patterns of behaviour and perceptions, enabling irrational fears, phobias, habits, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be dealt with. With the help of the hypnotherapist, you are able to comfortably step back and look at problems differently and maybe discover solutions to problems that had been missed before. A hypnotherapist will use their knowledge of psychology to effect change and promote wellbeing.
The British Medical Association approved hypnotherapy as a valid medical treatment in 1955 and the American Medical Association followed in 1958.
Isn't hypnosis just relaxation?
No, another common misconception is that hypnosis is simply just relaxation. If you think of hypnosis or trance as a state of heightened awareness and highly absorbed focus then there are lots of examples in life where you can be in that state of mind and yet be anything but relaxed. Relaxation is highly beneficial in a therapeutic setting and is commonly used as a way to induce hypnosis, but hypnosis is not relaxation. There are many ways to induce hypnosis without relaxing at all. Dr William McGeown at the Centre for Clinical Neuroscience, Hull University, conducted a study which showed that a unique pattern of brain activity occurred during hypnosis which was distinctly different from relaxation. Quite worryingly many hypnotherapists also seem to confuse hypnosis and relaxation, which may indicate a poor level of understanding, or inadequate training.
Can
anyone be hypnotised?
Yes - if they want to be. The myth that only some people can be hypnotised
came from a research study in which a hypnotic induction script was
read out to a group of volunteers. A small percentage of the volunteers
didn't achieve any sort of recognisable level of hypnosis, so it was
concluded that a small percentage of the general population couldn't
be hypnotised. In reality all the test really proved was that some people
didn't respond well to that particular method of induction. If the induction
method is adjusted to suit the individual person, and the person wants
to be hypnotised, then hypnosis is almost guaranteed.
Thankfully there are many ways to induce hypnosis, and a suitable approach is quite easily found. A skilled hypnotherapist does not work from a script and will adapt the hypnotic induction process from moment to moment based on their observations of your responses, both verbal and non-verbal. In effect creating a unique induction that is specific to you in that moment in time.
Can
I get stuck in hypnosis?
No absolutely not. Its a bit like asking 'Can I get stuck in a daydream?'.
Can
I be forced to do things against my will?
Emphatically, NO! You are always in control and aware of what you are
thinking and doing.
During hypnosis the client is in contact with their unconscious mind, the seat of all emotion and behavioural problems. Most other forms of therapy are carried out at a conscious level, and often they only work on the symptoms rather than the underlying cause of the problem.
The will of the conscious mind is very weak when compared to the automatic unconscious responses. These responses and emotional reactions are like computer programs which keep running and running, causing the same unpleasant effects, until they are dealt with.
Problems can occur when a behaviour pattern/program is made in response to a situation that occurred in the past. When the person grows up, the situation changes, but the behaviour response sometimes does not. As psychotherapy and NLP can change that behaviour response on an unconscious level, the scope is endless.
It is now widely recognised by the medical profession that mind and body are closely related. Therefore, any tension or disease in the mind can cause tension and disease in the body. Because both hypnotherapy and NLP work with the unconscious mind, then psychosomatic illnesses can be dealt with very quickly.

NLP creates a model of how individuals structure their own unique experiences in life. Using NLP we can step into your view of the world to discover, patterns of thought, beliefs, values and using NLP techniques, help you to change those patterns, set compelling goals, build motivation and change your life for the better.
All NLP is carried out in a more 'conscious' state, and is therefore particularly suitable for people or organisations who do not feel comfortable with the idea of hypnosis but who still would like to benefit from a speedy and effective form of therapy.
NLP therapy, like hypnotherapy is generally very quick and effective, for very specific issues several sessions are commonly all that is required. For NLP life coaching and business coaching more sessions spread over a longer period of time are usual.
As well as
offering NLP for therapy, Life
Coaching and Business Coaching, I also use NLP extensively within
my hypnotherapy sessions.
So what does that mean?
It means that by knowing how your brain works you can change it so that
is always working for you and improving your life and the lives of those
around you.
Who can benefit from using NLP?
People from all walks of life use NLP personally and professionally. Often
called the "Psychology of excellence" NLP is used for a multitude
of reasons.
For example:
Individuals using Neuro Linguistic Programming for Life Coaching for self improvement, will find it easier to achieve their goals, overcome their problems and develop new skills, because they gain greater access to their internal resources.
Businesses can utilise NLP for Business Coaching to greatly improve their sales and customer service as well as interpersonal management skills.
Educators can learn how each child learns best by studying the verbal and nonverbal language of a child. Education is communication of knowledge and experience through which one can retain the knowledge. NLP is used to strengthen communication skills of educators so that each student gains the most in the shortest amount of time.
Counsellors can help clients make lasting changes quickly and with lasting results. In a day and age when long drawn out therapies with limited results is the norm, NLP provides a fast and highly effective alternative.
Medical and Dental Professionals can eliminate patients' fears and anxieties about procedures. Along with the use of hypnosis to eliminate any possible pain the client may be anticipating.
Athletes can utilise NLP techniques to improve performance and concentration as well as mastering the skills they need to excel.
Actors & Performers can utilise NLP techniques in auditions and casting calls to get jobs. During performances NLP can assist in memorising lines as well unifying the performer with the character or image they are presenting for a more powerful performance.

Nature-Based
Therapies
(Ecotherapy,
Wilderness Therapy, Adventure Therapy, Walking Therapy)
I am very interested in taking therapy out of the consulting room and using our natural environment as a way to powerfully stimulate our awareness and promote personal growth. Research has shown that this can be a remarkably effective method of personal change. It uses all the benefits of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching combined with outdoor activities and a connection to the natural world. Suitable for anyone, but particularly effective for those who love nature and the great outdoors. Can also be successfully combined with my standard sessions held in my consulting room. Click here for further information.
I offer a number of nature-based therapies, ranging from walking therapy through to weekend workshops held in beautiful woodland in North Wales.

I do get lots of enquiries about hypnotherapy training in Manchester,
I do not offer full training or courses in hypnotherapy or NLP, though
I can recommend some good trainers in the area.
However I do run several one and two day workshops in Manchester and North Wales, which make use of hypnosis, NLP, psychotherapy, ecotherapy and coaching related skills.
