What is Blushing?
Blushing is a very common symptom of anxiety. It involves an increase in blood flow to the skin of the face, neck and the chest causing a highly visible reddening which is quite obvious to anyone who might be looking. The blush is often accompanied by other unpleasant sensations such as feeling hot, tingly and sweaty.
Anxiety is a general term for a number of related disorders that cause excessive nervousness, fear, and apprehension. Anxiety affects how you think, feel and behave and can produce very real physical symptoms such as blushing, sweating and nausea.
Someone who is blushing is feeling the effects of the ‘fight or flight’ response which occurs when we are anxious or fearful. The fight or flight response is your bodies natural response to a perceived threat. When it is activated, hormones are released into the body to enable you to either deal with or escape from the threatening situation. Due to the very visible nature of the blush and the embarrassment that it usually causes, the blush itself become a threat and something that should be avoided. Which then causes a heightening of the anxiety and discomfort, and an even more intense blush.
Blushing can occur in many situations and is very common where we feel we are being judged or under pressure to perform. Often it occurs in social situation, when we are giving a presentation, or a speech, or during job interviews. It is often associated with social anxiety and social phobia.
Due to the way blushing and anxiety function, it is almost impossible to fight it head on. You’ve probably already tried that and failed miserably. The more you try to control the blushing, the worse it often gets! I wonder if you could you imagine just how useful it would be for you to learn new and different ways to think and react so that your blushing and anxiety just faded away and no longer seemed a problem?
When you are committed to make the inner changes you need to control your blushing, simply phone me on 0161 881 4333 to make an appointment now.
Other symptoms of anxiety that may accompany the blush include:
Lack of concentration
Ice cold feeling
Fear of losing control
Fear of having a heart attack
Tightening of the throat
Frequent need to urinate
Nausea and/or vomiting
Fear of embarrassment
Pins and needles
Fear of going insane
Feeling detached from body
Loss of feelings and/or libido
Short term memory loss
Hot prickly feeling
Fear of making a fool of self
Fear of dying
Sensitivity to light/sound
PLEASE NOTE: If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms then get them checked out by a doctor right away. Whilst anxiety itself is not life threatening, the symptoms listed above can be caused by other more serious physical conditions, so it is important for you to discuss them with your GP.
