Depression is characterised by a persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure, and low self esteem. The usual treatment for it involves medication, psychotherapy or counselling. Although research has shown that the effectiveness of medication for mild to moderate depression may be minimal or non-existent. Depression is more than just a passing mood, so consider how frequently it happens, how severe is it when it happens, and how long it last each time. It is important to realise that depression is not a sign of weakness and that it is not easy for the depressed person to just ‘pull themselves together’ and get better by themselves.
Depression is a disorder that involves, mood and thoughts, and can affect the way you feel about yourself, the way you eat and sleep, and the way you think about things. It is quite normal for most people to feel a little down or pessimistic from time to time. However Without any form of treatment the symptoms can often go on for months or years.
This list below is not complete, and most people with depression will not experience all of these symptoms. The symptoms, or intensity of the symptoms may also vary over time.
Some common symptoms of depression may include:
Sense of hopelessness
Sense of worthlessness
Change in appetite
Sense of helplessness
Difficulty making decisions
Weight loss or gain
Feelings of Guilt
Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
Thoughts of death, suicide
Inexplicable Aches and pains
PLEASE NOTE: If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms then get them checked out by a doctor right away, it is important for you to discuss your symptoms with your GP.
There are also some specific forms of depression:
- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- Postnatal depression
- Bipolar disorder (manic depression)
The Depression Treatment
The treatment is available at both my Manchester and Harley Street, London practices, and is highly tailored to each person’s requirements, so the exact form of treatment and number of sessions will vary from person to person. However significant improvements can often be made in as little as 6 to 12 sessions, each session lasting 1 hour. For more deep rooted or complex problems, more sessions may be required.
The treatment integrates Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Counselling, which are each individually recognised as highly successful ways of changing people’s thoughts, behaviours and perceptions and I’m sure you can imagine the amazing benefits of combining these powerful techniques, allowing you to quickly and easily change the thoughts and behaviours you currently have so you just find yourself changing in beneficial ways.
